Greenpeace thinks President Obama should destroy lives now. Because of an ill-defined, generalized risk of climate change sometime in the future.

The day before Barack Obama officially began his second term as president of the United States, Greenpeace had a message for him. It consists of a five-point plan.

Point one is that Obama should permanently forbid the construction of the Keystone Pipeline. Translation: turn your back on thousands of well-paying, shovel-ready jobs at a time when more than 12 million Americans are out of work.

Point two involves “the expansion of clean, safe renewable energy.” Translation: support the most expensive kinds of energy so that increasing numbers of people step back in time and start relying on firewood to keep warm.

But it’s point three that’s the real doozy: “Make carbon unaffordable.”

What Greenpeace really means is that carbon dioxide emissions should be made unaffordable. But that translates to: make almost everything we humans do unaffordable.

As skeptical environmentalist Bjorn Lomborg has observed:

nobody emits CO2 for fun. CO2 emissions result from other, generally beneficial acts, such as burning coal to keep warm, burning kerosene to cook, or burning petrol to transport people. [backup link]

Why does Greenpeace think such drastic measures are necessary? It says that carbon dioxide is “poison” and “pollution” that puts people’s health, homes, and countries at risk. Here’s the full quote:

Why is it so cheap to quicken climate change and poison Americans? We need you to stand up to polluters, President Obama. They’re putting our health at risk, our homes at risk and our countries at risk. And you’re making it laughably easy to do so.

In the real world, every newborn babe emits carbon dioxide with every breath. Every loaf of bread emits CO2 as it rises. In the real world, the Ministry of Agriculture in my home province reports that plants are utterly dependent on CO2:

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an essential component of photosynthesis.

The benefits of carbon dioxide supplementation on plant growth and production within the greenhouse environment have been well understood for many years.

In Greenpeace’s twisted universe, however, babies are polluters and plant food is poison.

According to Greenpeace, the President of the United States should ensure that heating, cooking, and transporting kids to school becomes unaffordable. Why? Because our health, homes, and countries are “at risk” from climate change.

Yeah, that sounds smart. Let’s treat a child’s potential fever by cutting off both her legs now.
