‘VAR is KILLING football and turning people away from the Premier League’ – talkSPORT hosts furious about offs

VAR has been accused of ‘killing’ football and turning fans away from the Premier League after the technology’s most controversial weekend yet.

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara and talkSPORT host Danny Kelly were both furious after FOUR goals were chalked off across Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures for ridiculously marginal offside calls.

It played a key role in Liverpool’s tight 1-0 victory over Wolves, which maintained the Reds’ 13 point lead at the top of the table.

Liverpool’s win over Wolves was marred by more VAR controversy

We first saw the good side of VAR, as the decision to rule out Sadio Mane’s opening goal was overturned by the video assistant referee after it was initially disallowed for an incorrect claim of handball on Adam Lallana.

Nobody could argue over that, with the ball clearly hitting Lallana’s shoulder and not his arm, but fans were soon back to fuming with the technology again after Wolves had their equaliser ruled out for the tightest of offside calls.

Pedro Neto thought he has levelled at Anfield right on the stroke of half-time, but his celebrations were cut short as VAR ruled it out for offside by the barest of margins, with his arm deemed to be in front of the opposing defender.

That was the FOURTH goal of the weekend that was ruled out in similar circumstances. On Saturday alone, three different goals from three matches were ruled out for being offside by an armpit or even, in Norwich striker Teemu Pukki’s case, a beard!

O’Hara was outraged by the incidents and he told talkSPORT on Monday that, like former Premier League ref Mark Clattenburg, he believes VAR should be scrapped for offsides and reserved to correct only the most obvious errors on the pitch.

“VAR is absolutely killing the game,” said the former Spurs midfielder.

“I don’t know what the answer is, but all I know is that it is ruining football. It’s killing it, it’s got to go.

“The problem is, wherever you put a line somewhere there is always going to be a marginal decision.

“So, for me, the only way forward to stop all this nonsense is take away VAR for offsides. Just scrap it. Do it for red cards and clear and obviously fouls, but for offside just get rid of it.

“People pay good money to watch Premier League matches and they’re chalking off goals. That why we watch football! It’s an entertainment business.

“It’s a complete joke. It’s ruining these games.”

talkSPORT presenter Danny Kelly was likewise FUMING about this weekend’s controversies, and went purple with fury in a heated rant on Sunday’s Final World.

And he even called for referees chief Mike Riley to step down, saying the continuing farce is turning people away from the Premier League.

“It’s ridiculous,” he ranted.

“Mike Riley has got to come out in public and tell people what he’s going to do to improve this, or he must resign.

“He brought this nonsense in with reviewing goals for offside and it’s spoiling the game.

“People are turning away from the game and the Premier League’s brand is being tarnished.

“Resign, Mike Riley! Resign!”
