House hearing will weigh grounds for impeachment

The House impeachment inquiry opens a new phase Wednesday as the Judiciary Committee holds a hearing aimed at deciding whether to recommend articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The hearing will focus on the constitutional grounds for impeachment, including the meaning of “high crimes and misdemeanors” for which a president could potentially be removed. The House Intelligence Committee has been examining claims that Trump tried to extract political favors from Ukraine in exchange for foreign aid. On Tuesday, the Intelligence committee adopted a report of its findings on a party-line vote of 13 to 9, compiled after weeks of open hearings and closed-door testimony.

World leaders meet for NATO’s 70th anniversary

World leaders formally meet Wednesday in London for NATO’s 70th anniversary, as President Donald Trump and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron quarrel over the nature of the military alliance in a changing world and other subjects. On Tuesday Trump blasted Macron for saying NATO was experiencing “brain death.” In a further ratcheting up of tensions, the White House said it was considering imposing tariffs on up to $2.4 billion worth of French goods in response to that country’s new digital services tax targeting U.S. technology companies such as Amazon, Facebook and Google.

Sparkling Wine Countdown to the New Year calendar for $24.99 at participating stores. The new set includes seven mini bottles of sparkling wine to drink starting Christmas through New Year’s Eve. Although this isn’t an Advent calendar — which typically has 24 treats and is used to count down the days of Advent, the religious days leading up to Christmas — it’s expected to sell out just as fast as Aldi’s alcohol calendars did in early November. Not all Aldi stores sell wine, as some cities and states do not allow grocery stores to sell alcohol.
