David Moyes is ‘very lucky’ to get West Ham job, claims John Hartson who launches scathing attack on Scot

It’s fair to say John Hartson doesn’t believe David Moyes is the right man for the West Ham job.

Moyes is in charge of the Hammers for the second time following the sacking of Manuel Pellegrini on Saturday.

The former Manchester United and Everton boss first went to West Ham in November 2017 following their poor start to the 2017/18 campaign.

There were a few nervous moments for the club as they battled to stay in the top flight but in the end Moyes guided them to a 13th place finish.

However, the powers that be decided not to extend his stay at the club and opted to hire former Real Madrid and Manchester City boss Pellegrini.

West Ham have given Moyes an 18-month contract and the Scot has vowed to make sure they have no choice but to extend his contract.

  • Will West Ham survive under David Moyes?

“I think it says a lot about the owners, they thought the job I did was good enough to give me another opportunity,” said Moyes.

“This time I’m going to make it so there’s no choice but to renew. There’s a clause in there and I’m going to make it impossible to ignore that, that’s my plan.

“Do I feel I have unfinished business? I certainly do. I really, really enjoyed my time here last time.

“I felt that, by the end of my time, we had turned things around and had gone in a positive direction with the players, and I think the players would say that as well.

“They really enjoyed the end of the time here. Obviously I would have liked to have developed that and worked from there, but it didn’t quite happen.”

But one person who doesn’t have much faith in Moyes is former Hammer Hartson, who launched a scathing attack on Moyes’ credentials.

“I think David Moyes has been very lucky,” the former Hammers striker told talkSPORT on Monday.

“He’s been out of the game for a while and has been waiting in the wings for an opportunity.

“Yes he did OK when he went to West Ham with Stuart Pearce, before he was relieved of his duties and they brought in Pellegrini, but for me he’s been very fortunate.

“It’s a massive job. Yes he’s got experience, but he should never have been Manchester United manager, he was handpicked by Sir Alex Ferguson, something that wasn’t discussed at board level.

“He went into West Ham and was sacked after six months, he didn’t do very well in Spain [Real Sociedad], he took Sunderland down, so for me I think he’s a lucky man and I think West Ham could have gone elsewhere.

“It will have divided fans. Some will be happy to get a new manager in and get rid of Pellegrini, who was an absolute shambles. He spent an awful lot of money and never got a tune out of the players.

“But others, like myself, will probably not be so sure that person should have been Moyes.”

Moyes’ first game in his second spell in charge of West Ham is against fellow strugglers Bournemouth on New Year’s Day.
