Indiana teen shot, killed just five days after her birthday after passenger’s AR-15 went off in car

An Indiana teen’s death has been ruled a homicide after her backseat passenger’s AR-15 rifle went off and hit her while she drove, ultimately killing her.

Police said that Smith was sitting behind Annalysa McMillan as she drove her car Tuesday in Marion — about 85 miles north of Indianapolis — when his rifle went off and struck the 19-year-old, just five days after her birthday, according to CNN in an updated report Saturday.

A single gunshot to the teen’s back was determined to be the cause of death, with the manner ruled a homicide.

The shooting resulted in a minor accident with another driver, according to authorities, who were responding to a car accident when they found McMillan unresponsive. Their immediate resuscitation efforts proved futile when she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
