Some of those who have seen the new Joker movie in theaters have hated it, others think it’s one of the most important movies ever made. Whatever side you come down on, there’s no denying that Joker has already made a huge impact, and will keep doing so for as long as human beings can keep talking.

One of the most impactful scenes of the movie has got to be the moment in which Joker runs into the bathroom after his altercation with the three finance guys on the subway. In a completely unexpected turn of events, he begins a slow and melodic dance that seems totally out of the blue. And that’s because it was!

In reality, the scene was written to be totally different. In the original iteration, Arthur was supposed to run into the bathroom and throw up, before trying to stash his weapon and washing off his clown makeup. But when it came down to the day of shooting, both Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix didn’t feel like that was true to Arthur’s character. Instead, Phillips played a piece of music by the film’s composer for Phoenix, and the dance that you see in the movie is what the actor improvised right then and there.

Dancing was always going to be a big part of Arthur’s character, as Phillips always said that he was someone who just had music inside of him. As he slipped further and further into Joker, the more free his dancing became.
